Let's get one thing straight before we begin. I. LOVE. SUGAR. You might be nodding your head in agreement, like "me too, girl," but I don't think you understand. Sugar and me? We're more than friends...we are bff's.

So when I was asked to do a 7 day sugar detox, my first reaction was "yeah...that's funny." Yet, as the creepy internet fairies do, they suddenly began to send me more and more quotes and facts on why sugar is terrible for you. Don't get me wrong - I always knew it wasn't good for me. But I had no idea HOW bad. And when I started reading more, I figured, "it's only 7 days..." and I reluctantly stepped up to the challenge.
Alas, let me introduce you to the 5 things I never knew about sugar that you need to know right. now.
1) Sugar causes wrinkles.
YES. YOU READ THAT RIGHT. I AM NOT MESSING AROUND HERE. I had no stinkin' idea that sugar was one of the causes of my premature wrinkles. No wonder I'm getting them early. See, sugar causes what they call "glycation" in the science world. In simple terms, this means that the sugar in your bloodstream bonds to proteins, and forms molecules that make the collagen in your skin more brittle, thus causing wrinkles. Yep, that's horrifying.
2) The average American consumes 22 teaspoons of sugar a day.
Yes, you read that right. A DAY! I had no idea. I used to always think sugar meant ice cream, brownies, maybe some cookies thrown in there. But guys...it's in EVERYTHING. Literally everything. Which brings me to point number 2...
3) There are at least 61 names for sugar.
Ya'll, I had no stinkin' idea this was a thing. I actually found myself laughing in the grocery store when I was reading the ingredients. What does this mean? It means the food producers can use a plethora of words to disguise "sugar" from being listed in their ingredients...so when you THINK you are being healthy and avoiding it, you're still consuming it.
4) Even though sugar "wakes you up," your crash will be SO much worse.
Have you ever felt like you needed some chocolate at work to perk yourself up (aka me every single day)? Well, it's a proven fact that sugar spikes your blood sugar...for it to come crashing back down on you, making you feel so much worse than before. Instead of grabbing that candy bar, try going for some almonds or protein.
5) Sugar is the new nicotine.
Yep, you read that right. It puts our brains on a loop, the same way drugs do. We ingest it, it feels goooood, and then it leaves us...and an imprint on our brain. Soon enough, our brain is saying "hello there friend, I need more sugar...NOW," so we give it more. And it happens again, and again. Try googling "sugar and nicotine" and you'll read the insane amount of studies about the relationship between the two. It's scary, guys.
Ok, now that I've officially caused your jaw to drop to the floor, what can you do about it?! Check out my super fast informational video about how you can make some simple, practicle changes in your lifestyle to reduce your sugar intake. Don't worry, I'm not telling you to cut out brownies. I'm just sharing the little swaps I've made in my own sugar journey that have me feelin' better and losin' inches.
